Alfa Laval India CSR Sustainability initiative on Education
Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Alfa Laval India built a new school for marginalized and less privileged children in the beautiful lake village of Velvand.
In the year 1996 Samarth Vidya Mandir started as a high school with two rooms. Over the years it grew and so did the class rooms. However, the structure was quiet temporary with a tinned roof, no fans or proper toilets for the children. Children travel several kilometres every day either on bicycle or by walk to reach the school.
This higher secondary school caters to children who live in the radius of 35 kms of Velvand and are marginalized or have less privileged backgrounds. This is the only school in the village providing education from VII to X standard (High School). It has a 100% result in Xth standard for the last two consecutive years.
Anantha Padmanabhan, Managing Director Alfa Laval India and Cluster President India Middle East and Africa, states, “Company’s Mission is to create better everyday conditions for people through work in the focus areas for a positive contribution to the community at large. Alfa Laval’s Business Principles encompassing Social and Environmental elements amongst others describe the way the corporate must act to unearth boundless opportunities to make a positive contribution to a more sustainable future for India.”
Education is an important focus areas Alfa Laval India for its CSR projects. When the Samarth Vidya Mandir school requested Alfa Laval to help them in renovating the class rooms, the Alfa Laval team responsible for CSR visited and found the structure was too depleted, making renovating impossible. The Board of Directors decided that Alfa Laval India should build the school anew and provide it with furniture like cupboards, teacher’s tables, chairs, LED lightings and modern toilets.
Anantha added “We inaugurated the school on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya where, in India, we have a tradition of buying gold. We are investing in gold by participating in educating the young people in the countryside of our country. This investment will be worth million times more than investment in a few grams of gold. I am extremely happy today!”
Under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Alfa Laval India inaugurated the new building of Samarth Vidya Mandir School with 7 classrooms including place for a library, science lab and a computer lab. Anantha Padmanabhan along with Mattias K Andersson, Director Operations inaugurated the building.
Mr Mattias K Andersson presided as Chairman of the inauguration, “Alfa Laval’s mission is to create better everyday conditions for people through our work in the focus areas for a positive contribution to the community at large. Our focus is on the broad development of the communities located in backward areas across the country and supporting this school with education infrastructure is one of the examples.” Mattias added, “I really appreciate the work done by the school and I am truly impressed with what I have seen here”.
Dignitaries from the school, the local panchayat (local self-government) and heads of local police administration from the nearby villages along with Alfa Laval employees and CSR ambassadors attended the inauguration. They expressed their gratitude to Alfa Laval for this wonderful gesture.
