Energy Efficiency as the First Fuel for Decarbonization

Most of these savings are found in the industry and buildings sectors, areas of relevance for India, where rapid urbanization and industrialization are driving energy consumption to new heights.
What makes this even more striking is that two-thirds of the world’s primary energy is currently wasted, much of it as excess heat. In industrial settings, up to 50% of energy input is lost before it ever does useful work, representing a vast, untapped opportunity for recovery and reuse. For India, where energy security and sustainable growth are national priorities, harnessing this potential is both a necessity and an opportunity we simply cannot afford to ignore.
The numbers tell a compelling story:
- Every year, energy-efficient heat transfer solutions save up to 100 GW of energy and prevent 50 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, roughly equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of Delhi, India's capital.
- Up to 2.5% of the world’s CO₂ emissions could be prevented if all installed heat exchangers operated at optimal performance through regular maintenance and cleaning.
- Modern plate heat exchangers are up to 50% more efficient than traditional technologies, enabling industries to meaningfully reduce energy consumption, operational costs, and emissions.
- For India specifically, implementing efficient technologies in new industrial complexes, and retrofitting existing ones, can help avoid costly technology conversions down the line, maximizing long-term benefits from day one.
India’s rapid industrial growth and urbanization make energy efficiency not just an environmental imperative but a strategic economic opportunity. By adopting advanced technologies, optimizing processes, and reusing excess heat, Indian industries can achieve immediate energy and cost savings, reduce emissions, and sharpen their competitive edge. Sector coupling — connecting excess heat with neighboring industries, industrial clusters, or other manufacturing processes where it can be reused, offers additional pathways to maximize resource use, improve energy efficiency, and build more resilient industrial ecosystems. The good news is that the technology and expertise to unlock these savings are already available and affordable. Solutions such as heat integration, sector coupling, and advanced heat exchangers can help recover and repurpose energy that would otherwise be wasted. Regular audits, digital monitoring, and ongoing training are essential to maintain optimal performance and continuously surface new energy-saving opportunities.
And the economic case is just as strong as the environmental one. Investments in energy efficiency not only deliver measurable carbon reductions but also stimulate job creation, every USD 1 million invested can generate between 6 and 15 jobs, making it one of the most attractive propositions for a growing economy like India.
The power of collaboration
No single company or government can drive this transition alone. That is why the Energy Efficiency Movement (EEM, a global non-profit association co-founded by Alfa Laval and ABB at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, was built on a simple but powerful belief: that collaboration is the fastest route to change.
What began as a shared commitment between two industrial companies has grown into a worldwide movement. Today, EEM brings together nearly 600 members, known as “Movers”, across 49 countries and 29 industries, uniting industry leaders, policymakers, and academics in a neutral, trusted space to drive the energy transition forward. It is not a lobbying group or a marketing platform. It is a genuine, open-door initiative for anyone who believes that energy efficiency deserves a more prominent seat at the table in the global climate conversation.
The technology needed to halve the world’s carbon emissions by 2030 already exists. Energy efficiency alone could reduce carbon emissions by 40% over the next two decades. EEM exists to close the gap between what is possible and what is being done, by fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and accelerating real-world implementation at scale.
For India, this kind of collaborative framework is particularly relevant. As the country builds new industrial capacity and modernizes existing infrastructure, the decisions made today will shape energy consumption patterns for decades. Getting those decisions right, by embedding efficiency from the start rather than retrofitting it later, is where movements like EEM, and the broader industry ecosystem, can play a defining role.
Energy efficiency stands as the cornerstone of a sustainable energy future. It offers immediate, scalable, and cost-effective solutions for decarbonization, with significant benefits for both global and Indian markets. By focusing on innovative technologies, process optimization, and heat reuse, and by fostering a culture of continuous improvement, industries can unlock substantial environmental and economic gains.
The path to a net-zero future is clearer and more achievable than many realize. But it requires intent, investment, and above all, collaboration. Energy efficiency is not a distant aspiration; it is the first fuel we already have. The question is whether we are willing to use it.
